X-RAY (2022) is a new series of digital illustrations and a poem inspired by inquiry of taking an inner look at the life of a black woman. The patterns within each figure’s body has a double representation of camouflage; of not being recognized in plain site whilst stylized like an x-ray image. The black box accompanying each figure is symbolic of attempts to tame and control her. Her free hair is her crown resting outside and above the constraints of the box. The black box parallels in meaning similar to one found on an airplane, revealing valuable information after brokeness, aiding understanding of the past while enlightening forward movement.
What is inside of a black woman who preserves her history and learns to allow herself to be free from unconsciously carrying generations of hurt? Unboxing what was boxed in; who is at work yet a work in progress, who makes meals yet learns to feed herself, who made you laugh, who gave a lap to lay on and extended arms to arrest pain, who thought of you and let you know it, who shows up dressed, who cheers you on in life, who cries while praying, who dances while praising.
What is she thinking? Is she worried? Meditating? Can she hold on? Go on,sis, mother, auntie, friend. Is it okay to let her know that she would survive, even thrive if she'd let go? When is her time? Wasn't she spoken for from her mother's womb? Did she know she wouldn't be recognized in plain site? Aren't her talents unfolding before our very eyes? Isn't she unstoppable to say the least? Isn't she Abba's daughter to say the most? What is the x-ray of a black woman? Walk with her and see.
